Creativity, confidence and self-expression

Art

Art at Westwood Academy gives pupils the opportunity to explore ideas, develop practical skills and express themselves creatively.

We recognise that creative learning can help pupils build confidence, communicate their thoughts and experience success in different ways. Art provides a calm, purposeful space where pupils can take pride in their work, develop patience and see their ideas come to life.

Further information:

Exploring materials and techniques

Pupils work with a range of materials, tools and processes, including drawing, painting, printmaking, collage, sculpture and mixed media.

They learn how artists, designers and makers use colour, line, texture, shape and composition to communicate ideas. Pupils are encouraged to experiment, make choices and develop their own creative style.

Learning through creativity

Art supports wider learning across the curriculum. Pupils develop concentration, problem-solving, fine motor skills, visual communication and the ability to reflect on their work.

Projects may connect to themes from history, geography, literature, culture and the local environment, helping pupils understand how creativity can help them explore the world around them.

Building confidence through achievement

Pupils are supported to work at their own pace while being encouraged to take creative risks and build resilience.

We celebrate effort, progress and individuality. Artwork is displayed and shared wherever possible, giving pupils opportunities to feel proud of their achievements and contribute positively to the academy environment.

Art at Key Stage 3 and Key Stage 4

At Key Stage 3, pupils develop core creative skills, explore a range of artists and experiment with different materials and techniques.

At Key Stage 4, pupils build on these foundations through more sustained projects and, where appropriate, work towards relevant accreditation or unit awards. Pupils are supported to create work that reflects their interests, strengths and aspirations.

Creative Expression

Art gives pupils a safe space to explore ideas, express themselves and develop their own creative voice.

Skills and Confidence

Pupils experiment with a range of materials, techniques and processes, building confidence through practical, achievable creative work.

Inspiration & Progress

Through artists, local coastal culture and their own creative enquiry, pupils learn to reflect on their work, develop new ideas and take pride in their progress.
