Helping pupils grow in confidence, resilience and independence
Personal Development
At Westwood Academy, personal development is central to every pupil’s experience.
We support pupils to understand themselves and others, develop positive relationships, manage challenges and make informed choices. Our aim is to help every young person feel safe, valued and ready to take an active role in school, their community and adult life.
Personal development is woven throughout the school day. It is developed through lessons, mentoring, enrichment, practical activities, positive relationships and the everyday routines that help pupils feel secure and supported.

Building emotional literacy and resilience
Many pupils join Westwood Academy having experienced challenges that have affected their confidence, wellbeing or relationship with education.
Through SEAL, mentoring and nurture-based support, pupils develop emotional literacy, self-awareness and strategies to manage their feelings. They learn how to recognise emotions, communicate their needs, resolve conflict and respond positively when things feel difficult.
We help pupils understand that resilience is not about coping alone. It is about knowing when to ask for support, building trusted relationships and developing the confidence to keep moving forward.
Healthy relationships and informed choices
PSHE helps pupils develop the knowledge and understanding they need to make safe, healthy and informed choices.
Pupils explore topics including relationships, consent, health and wellbeing, personal safety, drugs and alcohol, online safety, financial awareness and preparation for adulthood.
Learning is carefully planned to be age-appropriate, relevant and responsive to the needs of our pupils and wider community.
Rights, responsibilities and belonging
Citizenship helps pupils understand their place within school, the local community and wider society.
Pupils learn about democracy, rights, responsibilities, equality, fairness and respect. They are encouraged to think critically, listen to different viewpoints and take part positively in the world around them.
We want every pupil to feel that their voice matters and that they can make a positive contribution to their community.
Practical skills for life
Life Skills helps pupils develop the confidence and independence needed for life beyond school.
Pupils learn practical skills such as budgeting, travel training, first aid, cooking, cleaning, organisation, communication and digital safety. These experiences help pupils understand how to manage everyday responsibilities and prepare for future education, training, employment and independent living.
A personalised approach
Every pupil develops at a different pace. Our staff work closely with pupils and families to ensure that support is appropriate, meaningful and linked to individual needs and aspirations.
For some pupils, progress may mean developing the confidence to take part in a group activity. For others, it may mean managing a difficult conversation, travelling independently or preparing for a college interview.
Whatever the starting point, we celebrate every step forward.
