Healthy food, positive routines and shared time together
Breakfast, Breaks and Lunchtime
At Westwood Academy, we believe that good nutrition, routine and shared mealtimes help pupils feel settled, focused and ready to learn.
Food is an important part of the school day. It supports wellbeing, belonging and healthy habits, while giving pupils opportunities to build positive relationships with staff and peers.
Why our mealtime approach matters
Providing food as part of the school day is about more than nutrition. It is part of our commitment to nurture, care, emotional wellbeing, inclusion, routine and readiness to learn.
At Westwood Academy, every pupil is supported to enjoy healthy meals in a safe, respectful and welcoming environment.
Breakfast: a positive start to the day
Every morning, we offer a free, nutritious breakfast to all pupils.
Breakfast is served in a relaxed and welcoming environment, giving pupils time to settle, connect with staff and prepare positively for the day ahead.
Choices may include:
- cereal;
- fresh fruit;
- toast and spreads;
- other light options, depending on availability.
Breaktime snacks
At breaktime, pupils can enjoy a range of warm, filling and healthy snack options.
These may include:
- toasties;
- soup;
- fruit;
- other simple, nutritious choices.
Lunch: nutritious, balanced and varied
We provide a hot, nutritious and varied lunch every day.
Our menus are designed to support pupils’ health and wellbeing, offer balanced meals using fresh ingredients and cater for a range of tastes and dietary needs.
Shared lunchtimes are also an important part of school life. They help pupils develop social skills, confidence and independence, while strengthening positive relationships with staff and peers.
Packed lunches
Packed lunches are not part of the Westwood Academy lunchtime offer.
This helps ensure that every pupil receives a consistent, healthy meal and that no young person feels disadvantaged or different from their peers. Where a pupil has a specific medical or dietary need, families should contact the academy so that appropriate arrangements can be discussed.
Free school meals
Some pupils may be eligible for free school meals.
If you think your child may be eligible, please contact the school office for further information and support with an application.
Healthy Schools Award
We are proud to have achieved the North Yorkshire Healthy School Gold Award, recognising our commitment to promoting the health, wellbeing and personal development of all pupils.
We believe that healthy, happy pupils are better able to learn, achieve and succeed. Our whole-school approach supports physical health, emotional wellbeing, positive relationships and personal safety, helping young people to make informed choices and develop lifelong healthy habits.
Through our curriculum, enrichment opportunities, pastoral support and partnership working with families and external agencies, we create an environment where pupils feel safe, supported and empowered to thrive.
The award reflects our ongoing commitment to ensuring that wellbeing is at the heart of school life and that every pupil is given the opportunity to reach their full potential academically, socially and emotionally.
