Maths
At Westwood Academy, maths helps pupils develop the knowledge, confidence and problem-solving skills they need for everyday life, further education and future employment.
We understand that some pupils may arrive with gaps in learning or low confidence in maths. Our teaching helps pupils build secure foundations, revisit important learning and experience success step by step.

Learning through clear structure
Pupils study key areas of mathematics including number, algebra, ratio and proportion, geometry, statistics and problem-solving.
Lessons are carefully structured, with clear explanations, modelling, practical activities and regular opportunities to revisit learning. Maths vocabulary is taught explicitly so pupils can understand, discuss and apply their learning with confidence.
Maths beyond the classroom
Maths is connected to everyday life wherever possible. Pupils explore how maths supports budgeting, shopping, travel, time, measurement, money, data and problem-solving.
Our aim is for pupils to leave Westwood Academy able to talk about maths, use maths confidently and apply it independently in their daily lives.
Key Stage 3
At Key Stage 3, pupils develop their understanding across the main strands of mathematics.
They learn to reason, solve problems and make connections between different areas of maths. Teaching focuses on strengthening number confidence, building fluency and helping pupils see how maths applies to the wider world.
Key Stage 4
At Key Stage 4, pupils continue to build on their knowledge while preparing for appropriate qualifications.
Learning includes increased use of GCSE-style questions and Functional Skills pathways, helping pupils develop the skills needed for examinations, further education, training and employment.
Building Confidence in Maths
We help pupils develop confidence in maths by revisiting key knowledge, closing gaps and celebrating progress in small, achievable steps.
Problem-Solving for Everyday Life
Pupils learn how maths connects to everyday life, including money, time, measurement, travel and practical decision-making.
Resilient, Independent Learners
Through clear teaching, mathematical vocabulary and regular retrieval practice, pupils develop the confidence to explain their thinking, solve problems and persevere when learning feels challenging.
