Reading for pleasure

Reading is central to our English curriculum.

Pupils explore a broad range of fiction, non-fiction, poetry and drama, including classic and contemporary writers. Texts are selected carefully to reflect pupils’ interests, needs and reading confidence, while also introducing them to new voices, experiences and perspectives.

We want every pupil to find books, authors and subjects that engage them. Through shared reading, discussion and independent reading, pupils develop vocabulary, comprehension, imagination and a greater confidence in themselves as readers.

Writing with confidence

Pupils develop the skills to write clearly, accurately and creatively for different purposes and audiences.

They learn how to plan, draft, improve and present their work, while building confidence in spelling, punctuation, grammar and vocabulary. Writing opportunities include creative writing, persuasive writing, non-fiction, analytical responses and practical communication for everyday life.

Speaking and listening

Communication is an important part of learning at Westwood Academy.

Pupils are encouraged to share ideas, listen respectfully, take part in discussion and develop the confidence to speak in different situations. These skills support learning across the curriculum and help pupils prepare for future education, training, employment and adult life.

How we support progress

English teaching at Westwood Academy is carefully adapted to meet individual starting points.

Staff use assessment to identify gaps and plan learning in manageable steps. Pupils benefit from explicit vocabulary teaching, modelling, structured support, regular reading opportunities and targeted interventions where appropriate.

Our aim is for every pupil to leave Westwood Academy able to read with greater confidence, communicate clearly and use English successfully in education, work and everyday life.

Key Stage 3

At Key Stage 3, pupils study a broad range of fiction, non-fiction, poetry and drama.

Learning develops reading comprehension, vocabulary, writing skills and spoken language. Pupils are supported to explore texts with increasing confidence, respond thoughtfully to what they read and develop their own voice as writers.

Targeted support is provided where needed to help pupils strengthen reading fluency, comprehension, spelling, writing and communication.

Key Stage 4

At Key Stage 4, pupils work towards the English pathway that is most appropriate for their needs and aspirations.

This may include GCSE English Language, GCSE English Literature or Functional Skills English. Pupils continue to develop the reading, writing and communication skills needed to achieve qualifications and prepare for their next steps.
