Key Stage 4 builds on the foundations established in earlier years and helps pupils prepare for their next steps.

The curriculum is shaped around each pupil’s strengths, needs and aspirations. Alongside continued support in core subjects, pupils work towards appropriate qualifications, accreditation and positive destinations.

Qualifications and accreditation

Pupils follow pathways that may include GCSE, Functional Skills, Entry Level and unit award qualifications, where appropriate.

English, maths and science remain central to the Key Stage 4 curriculum. Pupils are supported to develop the knowledge, confidence and resilience needed to achieve meaningful outcomes and prepare for further education, training or employment.

Preparing for adulthood

Alongside academic learning, Key Stage 4 places increasing emphasis on independence, employability and life beyond school.

Pupils develop practical skills through Life Skills, Food Studies and Digital Studies, alongside careers education, work-related learning and preparation for post-16 transition.

They are supported to explore future opportunities, understand the choices available to them and develop the confidence to take their next step.

Positive destinations

Our aim is for every pupil to leave Westwood Academy with a clear plan for the future.

This may include further education, training, an apprenticeship, employment or, where appropriate, a successful return to mainstream education. We work closely with pupils, families and external partners to help ensure each young person is prepared for a positive and sustainable destination.
