Humanities
Humanities at Westwood Academy helps pupils understand the people, places, events and ideas that have shaped the world around them.
Through History, Geography and Religious Education, pupils develop their knowledge of the past, their understanding of the world today and their ability to think critically about different perspectives.
Humanities is taught at Key Stage 3 and gives pupils the opportunity to explore important questions about identity, culture, community, fairness and the environment.

History
In History, pupils explore significant events, people and periods from the past.
They develop an understanding of how the past has shaped modern Britain and the wider world. Pupils learn to ask questions, consider evidence and understand that history can be viewed from different perspectives.
Geography
In Geography, pupils explore the physical and human world around them.
Learning includes places, environments, communities, climate and how people interact with the world they live in. Where appropriate, pupils make connections to their local coastal environment and the opportunities and challenges facing coastal communities.
Religious Education
Religious Education helps pupils explore different beliefs, values and ways of life.
Pupils learn about a range of religions and worldviews, while developing respect for others and an understanding of diversity within modern Britain.
Building knowledge and confidence
Humanities lessons are designed to be accessible, engaging and relevant.
Teachers use clear explanations, visual resources, discussion, practical activities and carefully structured tasks to help pupils build knowledge and confidence over time. Reading, vocabulary, communication and critical thinking are developed throughout the curriculum.
Preparing pupils for the future
Humanities helps pupils become informed, respectful and thoughtful members of their communities.
By developing an understanding of the world beyond their immediate experience, pupils are better prepared to take part in society, make informed choices and continue their learning with confidence.

Geography helps pupils understand the places, environments and communities that shape their lives, from the local coast to the wider world.

History helps pupils explore the events, people and ideas that have shaped the world they live in today.
Informed Citizens
Through Religious Education and wider humanities learning, pupils develop respect for different beliefs, cultures and perspectives, becoming thoughtful and responsible members of society.
