At Westwood Academy, regular attendance is important for pupils’ learning, wellbeing and future success.
Every day in school gives pupils the opportunity to learn, build positive relationships, develop confidence and feel part of our community. We want every pupil to feel safe, valued and motivated to attend.

Our approach
We recognise that some pupils and families may face barriers to attendance. Our approach is supportive, nurturing and trauma-informed.
We work closely with parents, carers, local authorities and external agencies to understand any difficulties and provide the right support at the earliest opportunity.
Working with families
Good attendance is a shared responsibility between pupils, families and school.
Where attendance becomes a concern, we seek to understand the reasons behind absence and work together to find supportive solutions. This may include regular communication with parents and carers, individual attendance plans, pastoral support, targeted interventions or support from external professionals.
Our aim is always to help pupils re-engage positively with education.
Our expectations
We have high expectations for attendance and punctuality for all pupils.
We encourage pupils to:
- attend school every day;
- arrive on time;
- be ready to learn;
- take pride in their progress;
- ask for support when they need it.
We also recognise and celebrate improvements in attendance, punctuality and engagement.
Supporting School Attendance
Good attendance plays a vital role in a child’s education, wellbeing and future success.
The Children’s Commissioner has produced a helpful guide offering practical advice and reassurance for parents whose child may be finding it difficult to attend school. The resource includes simple strategies to build confidence, establish positive routines and work collaboratively with schools to support regular attendance.
