Learning through practical investigation

Science is taught through clear explanations, practical activities and structured opportunities to investigate.

Pupils learn how to plan enquiries, use equipment safely, observe carefully, record findings and draw conclusions. Lessons are broken into manageable steps so that pupils can build confidence and experience success.

Reading, writing and numeracy are developed throughout science, helping pupils understand scientific information, use key vocabulary and communicate their ideas clearly.

Science beyond the classroom

Science helps pupils understand the role it plays in their own lives and in the wider world.

Through topics linked to health, technology, the environment and local industry, pupils develop an appreciation of how science shapes the world around them and the opportunities it can create for the future.

Key Stage 3

At Key Stage 3, pupils study the three main areas of science:

• Biology
• Chemistry
• Physics

They develop their understanding of scientific concepts while building practical investigation skills and scientific reasoning.

The curriculum helps pupils strengthen the knowledge and confidence needed to access science successfully as they move through school.

Key Stage 4

At Key Stage 4, pupils continue to build their scientific knowledge and practical skills through personalised pathways.

Pupils may work towards appropriate qualifications and accreditation, including GCSE and Entry Level routes where suitable. Practical work remains an important part of learning and helps pupils apply their knowledge to real-world situations.
